Sylhet also known as Jalalabad, is a metropolitan city in northeastern Bangladesh. It is the administrative seat of Sylhet Division. The city is located on the right bank of the Surma River in northeastern Bengal. It has a subtropical climate and lush highland terrain. The city has a population of more than 479,837 residents. Sylhet is one of Bangladesh's most important spiritual and cultural centers. The city's dargahs draw several thousand devotees each year.
The name of Sylhet is the anglicized form of the ancient Indo-Aryan term Srihatta. In 1303, the Sufi Muslim leader Shah Jalal conquered Sylhet by defeating the local Hindu Raja. Ibn Battuta visited Sylhet in the 14th century and saw Bengali Muslims transforming the region into an agricultural basket. Sylhet was a mint town of the Bengal Sultanate. In the 16th-century, Sylhet was controlled by the Baro-Bhuyan zamindars and became a district of the Mughal Empire. British rule began in the 18th century under the administration of the East India Company. With its ancient seafaring tradition, Sylhet became a key source of lascars in the British Empire. The Sylhet municipal board was established in 1867. Originally part of the Bengal Presidency and later Eastern Bengal and Assam; the town was part of Colonial Assam between 1874 and 1947, when following a referendum and the partition of British India, it became part of East Bengal.The Sylhet City Corporation was constituted in 2001. The Government of Bangladesh designated Sylhet a metropolitan area in 2009.
The hinterland of the Sylhet valley is the largest oil and gas-producing region in Bangladesh. It is also the largest hub of tea production in Bangladesh. It is notable for its high-quality cane and Agarwood. The city is served by the Osmani International Airport. People from Sylhet form a significant portion of the Bangladeshi diaspora, particularly in Britain.

All three main transportation systems are connected with Syhlet. There is an international airport in the city. Name of the airport is Osmani International Airport. The main town is 241 km far from Dhaka. It may take 5-6 hour by bus. Buses are available from Saydabad, Kallanpur and Kamlapur Dhaka. AC and Non AC are there. Train service is available from Kamlapur Railway station. It is better to travel at night by train. It will take 7-8 hours. Syhlet railway station is near Kadam Tali bus terminal. There is no steamer communication with Dhaka.

Tamabil
Tamabil is the border area with India and is 05 km before Jaflong. If you intend to visit Shilong of India then you will have to cross this border by completing your customs formalities. To go to India you require valid Visa.

Sripur is another beautiful tourist spot where you can see the waterfall with great tide falling form the hills. Besides the enchanting views of the area, one can also have a glimpse of the waterfalls across the border of India. Very Big stones sometimes are coming in this waterfall in Sripur. After completion of visiting Jaflong and Tamabil you must visit Sripur on the way to go back to Sylhet. It’s only 7-8km from Jaflong on the same road to Sylhet a sub road entered into Sripur waterfall. Here you can see the stone collection and orange garden if you go inside Sripur crossing the hills.

Jaintiapur is only 5 km. from Jaflong, a scenic spot amidst tea gardens. At about 35 km. northwest of Sylhet town, linked by rail, road and river is Chhatak, the seat of Assam Bengal Cement Factory, Chhatak is famous for orange garden. After complete Sripur on the way back to Sylhet don't miss to visit Jointika in Jointapur. Jaintapur was the capital of Jainta Kingdome at 18th century. Jainta Rajbari was the palace of Kings of Jainta, it’s just adjacent of Jainta Bazar. Though the condition of this king’s palace is already damaged enormously but a huge number of tourists visit here due to the historical background of Jainta Kingdom.
A lots of picnic parties goes to Jaintapur forests and also other areas of Jaflong, Sripur and Tamabil to enjoy a full day in the nature. Bangladesh produces and exports a large quantity of high quality tea every year. Most of the tea estates are in Sremongol. It is called "The land of two leaves and a bud".

Sripur: A beautiful place for seeing Gushing Sylhet Waterfalls high on the mountains. Besides, the enchanting views of the area, one can also see large stone quarry and have a glimpse of the waterfalls across the border. It is conveniently located only 7-8km from Jaflong on the same road to Sylhet.
Jaintapur: Famous for its megalithic archaeological ruins and only 5 km. from Jaflong. It is a beautiful spot amidst tea gardens. Once this was the capital of Jainta Kingdom at 18th century. The ruined palace of the Kings is adjacent to the local market, however, big number of tourists visit here due to the historical background of Jainta Kingdom.
Lala Khal: This wide canal is a common tourist destination as the water here appears in different colors at different points.
The Museum of Raja: Located at the heart of Sylhet, the museum's mission is to preserve and share the rich history of the great Mystic poet Dewan Hasan Raja.
Temple of Sri Chaittayana Dev: This 500 year old famous temple is located about 45 km southeast from Sylhet town. Yearly fair is organized on the full moon day of the Bangla month Falgun. Hundreds and thousands of devotees from home and abroad attend this colorful fair.
Tilagarh EcoPark: Located about 6 km from Sylhet city. It is a tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen bio-geographic zone.
Shrine of Hajrat Shah Jalal and Hajrat Shah Poran: Shrine of these two renowned sufis are located close to sylhet town.
Tamabil: A border crossing between India and Bangladesh located 55km north of Sylhet. The border formalities being messy, foreigners rarely cross here. But scenery starting from past the border and up to Shillong in India is spectacular.
Tribal Village: Several aboriginal tribes live high up on the hills and practice age-old rituals, customs and traditions. With prior permissions it is possible to visit them during yearly festival periods.
